The Denim Edit: The Jeans I’m Actually Wearing in 2026

If there is one thing I will always have in my closet, it’s a good pair of jeans. But the jeans I reach for now look a little different from the ones I wore years ago and honestly, so does my life. These days, I need denim that works for real life. I need jeans I can wear to work, throw on for a store run, style for dinner, and still feel like myself in. And as my body and lifestyle have changed, I’ve realized that updating my style doesn’t always mean buying an entirely new wardrobe.

Sometimes you just need a better pair of jeans.

So consider this my 2026 denim edit: the styles that make an outfit feel current without making you feel like you're trying to dress like somebody 10 years younger than you.

1. Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg denim is easily one of my favorite ways to make a basic outfit look more intentional.

You don't have to do much with them. Add a fitted tank or tee, a belt, a good bag, and your favorite shoes—and suddenly you have an outfit.

For work, I love the idea of pairing darker wide-leg denim with a blazer or structured jacket. For the weekend, switch the blazer for a sweatshirt or simple top and sneakers.

The formula: Wide-leg jeans + fitted basic + third piece + good shoe.

2. Barrel Jeans

I'm going to be honest. These are NOT my personal favorite, but I've seen many of people rock the heck out of them. I believe you have to consider your body type. These are for the girlies who have slimmer legs and it is to create more volume on the bottom.

It's definitely one of those pieces that can instantly make your basics feel more interesting. Because the jeans already have shape, it makes sense of keeping everything else relatively simple.

Formula: barrel jeans, white tee, pointed shoe, simple jewelry, done.

This is also a perfect example of why you don't necessarily need more clothes. Sometimes adding one updated silhouette makes the basics you already own feel new again.

3. Straight-Leg Jeans

If you don't want to jump all the way into wide-leg or barrel denim, start here. A good straight-leg jean is one of the easiest styles to wear because it doesn't require you to rethink your entire closet.

Wear them with sneakers. Wear them with loafers. Add a heel for dinner. Throw on a blazer for work, and even a dad hat and call it a day! They're simple, versatile, and exactly the kind of piece I want more of in my wardrobe these days.

4. Cuffed Jeans

Sometimes the smallest styling detail makes the biggest difference. A cuff instantly gives denim a little more personality, especially when you're wearing a shoe you actually want people to see.

Right now I am obsessed with the pair that Cardi B had on for her Old Navy campaign. As soon as my size comes back in stock I'm grabbing a pair!

And yes, around here, we want to see the shoe! Try cuffed denim with a pointed heel, slingback, or another statement shoe and let the bottom half of the outfit do the work.

5. Jorts & Longer Denim Shorts

I have officially reached the point where I appreciate a little more length in my denim shorts.

And thankfully, longer denim shorts and jorts can still feel stylish. The key for me is balancing the proportions. If the shorts are longer and relaxed, I'll pair them with something a little more fitted or structured on top. Add a belt, jewelry, and a cute shoe and it feels intentional instead of like you borrowed somebody's oversized shorts.

You Probably Don't Need a Whole New Wardrobe

This has probably been the biggest lesson for me while finding my style again.

Your body changes. Your lifestyle changes. Your responsibilities definitely change.

That doesn't mean you suddenly don't know how to dress. Sometimes the clothes in your closet simply belong to a version of your life that doesn't exist anymore...

Instead of replacing everything, I've been focusing on updating a few key pieces and learning how to style what I already own differently. A current pair of jeans, more quality basic, a shoe that makes the outfit, even layering. That's enough to make a closet you've had for years feel completely different.

And that's really the philosophy behind my updated Back to the Basics Style Guide—helping women get dressed again without feeling like they need to buy an entirely new wardrobe to do it.

Because we're not trying to become somebody else.

We're just learning how to dress the woman we are now.
